Impresario Norman Granz presented his first ever JATP on 2 July 1944 at the Philharmonic Auditorium, Los Angeles. The title of the concert had been shortened by the printer from ‘A Jazz Concert at the Philharmonic Auditorium’ to ‘Jazz at the Philharmonic’.

The concept of putting a mix of small bands and singers together and concluding with a dozen players in an impromptu jam session was a hit from the outset and right up until the 1980s JATP toured the world featuring many of the biggest names in jazz.

Numerous concerts were released on LP and for many young people these recordings were their introduction to the exciting sounds of the very best American jazz talent.

The sounds of the capacity audiences roaring their wildly enthusiastic approval of the music is very evident on many of these recordings and we aim to recreate that atmosphere in this tribute concert. The line-up features a selection of young jazz talent alongside some of the biggest names on today’s British jazz scene.

One of a series of Sunday Afternoon Concerts presented by The Jazz Repertory Company.
