‘There is not a bad melody, there is not an ugly bar in Le comte Ory,’ wrote the 19th-century English operatic chronicler Henry Chorley. Franz Liszt went further, dubbing it ‘the champagne opera’. The legend of Count Ory relates how Ory and his philandering men lay siege to a village whose menfolk are all away on crusade, and then to a convent.

So risqué a story fell foul of self-appointed moralists. Since there is no wittier or more finely honed opera in the entire Rossini canon than Le comte Ory, the loss was all theirs.

A concert performance in French with surtitles in English.

5.45pm: Pre-performance talk with Richard Osborne.
