Classical Opera presents its first performance of Mozart’s magnificent late opera, allegedly written within 18 days during the composer’s final months. For a long time dismissed as the black sheep among Mozart’s mature operas, La clemenza di Tito is only now becoming recognised as a masterpiece, and with its combination of nobility and passion, virtuosity and economy of gesture, it can be seen to represent the apotheosis of the 18th-century opera seria.
Mozart himself called the work an opera vera – a ‘true’ opera – and his skill in, and commitment to, creating dynamic and psychologically insightful musical drama radiates throughout the score.
