Hollie McNish + Metropole Orkest

Verse 1

Venue: Cadogan Hall

Verse 1 is an exciting new live concept, a collaboration between the acclaimed, prize-winning, British performance poet Hollie McNish and the hottest jazz and pop orchestra in the world, Metropole Orkest and its Grammy award-winning conductor Jules Buckley.

Poetry Versus Orchestra is a collaboration, a book, an album and now, with Verse 1, also a live experience full of modern poetry by acclaimed poet Hollie McNish as part of the #ASOSSupportsTalent campaign. She experiments with the live format in a unique way – poetry and music together – but also apart, as the show will open with her and guest poets reading poetry.

The album has brought together three masters in their field and fuses contemporary orchestral music co-composed and conducted by Jules Buckley, played by Metropole Orkest from the Netherlands, with Hollie’s inimitable spoken word to create a new piece of art for the listener. They launch the album with this one-off live performance which sees Hollie joined by British poets Salena Godden and Vanessa Kisuule.

Socio-critical, political, emotional and thought-provoking – Hollie’s spoken word is complemented by the powerful atmosphere created by the orchestra, allowing the unique sound to envelop and enrich the text. The album ranges from blissfully happy experiences, thoughts of a mother, to breastfeeding, immigration and the profound portrayal of a refugee.

Hollie McNish said, “It is one of the biggest honours to have these poems read, thought about and composed into music by what I consider one of the world’s best and most approachable orchestras.”

Jules Buckley added, “Setting poetry to orchestral music has been rarely done, and it was a unique journey to explore how to express Hollie’s art in orchestral music form. I hope we have made the border between poetry and music vanish. Hollie is an incredible talent. I’m privileged to create something new and unique with the Metropol Orkest and I’m looking forward to playing it live at Cadogan Hall!”

Hollie McNish is a British poet, known for her controversial and thought-provoking performances, on record as well as on stage. Her treatment of today’s problems and topics has led to Views in the Millions on YouTube, international recognition and acclaim.

Jules Buckley has co-composed the album alongside Chris Wheeler (Heritage Orchestra), it was arranged by Jules, together with Tom Trapp and Simon Whiteside.

Ticket holders have the opportunity to attend an exclusive ‘Meet & Greet’ with Holly in the foyer from 5.30pm on the day.
