The atmospheric and lyrical Luminosity combines viola, organ, the Indian stringed tanpura and chorus. The seven-movement work takes the listener through the ‘transcendent beauty of creation’, using all the forces to create moments of true stillness and overwhelming intensity.

The five colourful movements of Vaughan Williams’ In Windsor Forest are lively and lyrical, while the sheer melodic beauty of his Serenade to Music reduced Rachmaninoff to tears. McDowall’s Four Piano Solos, combining rhythmic vitality with atmospheric stillness, from the lively bustle of New York to an impressionistic sound painting of Venice, received rapturous applause at their recent Polish premiere by tonight’s pianist, Nico de Villiers.
