First performed on Good Friday 1727, the St Matthew Passion was conceived on a monumental scale. The story of Christ’s betrayal, trial and death is told in the words of the Evangelist, with the soloists and choir taking the roles of Jesus, his disciples, Pilate and the crowd. Bach intersperses the narrative with profoundly expressive choruses, arias and chorales to produce a work of intense emotional impact.
Sung in German.
