In this great oratorio, first performed in 1739 – three years before Messiah – the chorus takes the starring role in telling the Biblical story of the Hebrews’ escape from oppression and slavery in Egypt. Having set the scene, Handel’s music in Part 1 vividly depicts the succession of plagues that finally compelled the Pharaoh to release Moses and his people. Part 2 of the oratorio is a triumphant setting of Moses’ song of praise to the Lord for their deliverance.
