EFG London Jazz Festival 2015: Maria Schneider Orchestra

with support: Liam Noble

Venue: Cadogan Hall

The most talented jazz composer of her generation, Maria Schneider makes a very rare London appearance with the superb New York big band that has been the heart and soul her music since the early 90s. Years of working closely with Gil Evans and Bob Brookmeyer explain her command of rich and distinctive orchestral texture – and her charismatic stage presence that draws the audience into the core of her music.

‘Like the music of her most obvious predecessors, Duke Ellington and Gil Evans, Schneider’s reaches towards a significant new level of imagination, making hers the first truly novel approach to jazz band composition of the new century.’ (LA Times)

The opening set comes from Liam Noble who plays a solo piano set based around his new album, Room Somewhere. ‘A brilliant pianist who hardly plays a solo without at least one turn of phrase that brings you to the edge of your seat.’ (The Guardian)

On Maria’s new album, The Thompson Fields:

‘The singularly most beautiful record I’ve heard this year.’
(The Arts Desk)

‘Shows just what a supple and powerful instrument a jazz orchestra can be.’ (★★★★★ The Telegraph)

‘There is nobody more capable of harnessing emotions in music and projecting and preserving the beauty and power of the natural world in sound than Maria Schneider. No words can properly convey the wonders embedded in this music.’ (★★★★★ AllAboutJazz.com)
