Emmanuel Chabrier’s ravishing and riotous L’Étoile becomes NSO’s pre-Christmas treat Lucky Star. In fairy-tale land, lovable rogue Lazuli falls in love with Princess Laoula, who is due to marry the clownish King Ouf. Lazuli risks being beheaded as part of Ouf’s birthday celebrations. But Ouf’s superstitions, encouraged by mysterious astrologer Siroco, bring the young lovers together. Chabrier’s effervescent score sparkles with glorious tunes and scrumptious Romantic harmonies.

Susannah Waters directs, following her triumph with Glyndebourne’s Imago; the designer is Nicola Blackwell. Neil Jenkins, whose career has taken him from San Diego to Singapore, is King Ouf; Lazuli is sung by mezzo Katie Bray, fresh from débuts at Glyndebourne, Opera North, and ETO; Laoula is the captivating Stephanie Corley, recently Opera North’s Merry Widow. French opera aficionado Nicholas Jenkins, currently assisting Sir Mark Elder and Sir Simon Rattle in this repertoire, conducts St Paul’s Sinfonia and NSO Chorus.
