‘These sudden joys have sudden endings. They burn up in victory like fire and gunpowder.’ (Friar Laurence).
With over 40 different operatic adaptations of Shakespeare’s fateful classic, Romeo and Juliet has inspired some of the greatest composers, opera producers and ballet directors throughout centuries. Together we will revel in their glorious music as Tyler considers the differing roles of Romeo in some of the most well-known musical versions, and the individual nuance that each composer brings to the tragic tale. There will be interesting backstage stories from his recent performances of Romeo in Boris Blacher’s Romeo and Juliet for Opera de Lyon.
