Mark Austin discusses La traviata and considers its music and drama from a conductor’s point of view. He will survey some of the questions the conductor must ask when performing the opera: how musical interpretation can complement the director’s approach, how to weave Verdi’s different musical idioms into a coherent whole, how to cast the roles to best effect and what to make of great historical recordings.
Mark will be joined by baritone Ricardo Panela who will sing extracts from the role of Germont as part of the lecture.
