Violence, Religion, Power and Lust: Why did Spain prove such a fruitful backdrop for the most famous European composers of the 19th century?
In this lecture, Becca will look at why the Iberian Peninsula is so heavily populated with great operatic characters: from Figaro and Don Giovanni to Carmen and Don Carlos. Focussing primarily on a selection of the Spanish operas of Verdi, Massenet and Bizet she will take us on a tour of Spain: through war, religion and monarchy, to sexual violence and deceit.
