‘Poetry fused with breathtaking technical perfection’ is how the brilliant young French pianist Emmanuel Despax was described after a recent concert at the Louvre. Tonight he joins the Orpheus Sinfonia in three piano concertos including a world premiere.

Stephen Goss’s accessible new piano concerto is inspired by the extraordinary architecture, sculpture and designs of Thomas Heatherwick. The concerto was specially commissioned by SW Mitchell Capital for Emmanuel Despax.

The programme begins with Beethoven’s joyous First Symphony and concludes with two jewels of the Romantic virtuoso piano concerto repertoire. Tonight’s concert will be recorded live for future release on Signum Classics.

Interactive display for tablet users

In a first-ever for a classical music concert, Orpheus Sinfonia presents an interactive display, accompanying the Goss Piano Concerto. Conceived as a wordless programme note, forming a visual counterpoint to Goss’ new work, the interactive display reveals many of the architectural influences behind the music.

Finding your way around a new piece of concert music can be a challenging task. The listener might be bombarded with an overwhelming array of abstract sounds that confuse and bewilder. For the premiere of Stephen Goss’ Piano Concerto, Mark Insoll (producer) and David Sweeney (editor) have created an interactive display, for users of the iPad and other tablet devices. There are four separate parts to the display which help to evoke the mood, character and atmosphere of the concerto’s individual movements. Each part lasts for around two minutes and can be started, paused, or repeated at the listener’s leisure.
