Pandit Rajan and Sajan Mishra

in a rare recital of thumri

Rajan and Sajan Mishra are recognised as India’s finest singers of the North Indian style of khyal, from the esteemed lineage of the Benares Gharana. They studied under their father Pt Hanuman Prasad Mishra and their uncle Pt Gopal Mishra. Literally translated as ‘imagination’, khyal is an elaborate and virtuoso style, demanding improvisational flexibility as well as careful attention to notation, phrasing and rhythm. In this concert however they provide a very rare treat for our London audience by focusing for the first time on thumri, a romantic and lyrical style of singing closely associated with Varanasi.
