“A lavish, sumptuous production from a company that is by far the best at bringing imported Russian opera and ballet to British audiences.” (★★★★☆ StageTalk magazine)

With an impressive cast and accompanied by a live orchestra with over 30 musicians, Verdi’s masterpiece and best-loved opera – a tragic tale of misunderstanding, revenge and sacrifice – is brought vividly to life by the Russian State Ballet and Opera House, who delighted audiences last year with hugely successful performances of Carmen and La Traviata.

“Tatyana Zakirov as Gilda has a pure soprano voice… thrilling the audience with her controlled coloratura.”
(Mike Tilling, Scarborough News)

Based on a play by Victor Hugo, Le roi s‘amuse, the opera was written by Giuseppe Verdi and his librettist Francesco Maria Piave to fulfil a contract for a new opera to be produced at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice during the 1850-1851 season.

The tragic story revolves around the hunchbacked court jester, Rigoletto, his beautiful much-loved daughter Gilda (whom he had kept secret from the Court) and the Duke of Mantua he serves.

Verdi’s Rigoletto is widely considered to be his first great operatic masterpiece. A succession of stunning tunes, including the famous La donna è mobile, combined with an ever-present underlying tension and menace in a plot involving abduction, seduction and a hired assassin.

This is an opportunity for opera lovers to see Rigoletto as never before with an established and long standing Russian theatre that continues to grow on the international stage and wins awards in the field of opera and ballet.

Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
