- Madam Butterfly
The Russian State Opera presents Puccini’s Madam Butterfly, featuring an impressive cast and accompanied by its orchestra of over 30 musicians.
This tale of the doomed love of an American naval lieutenant and his young Japanese bride inspired Puccini to write some of his most sublime and beautiful music.
Set in Japan at the turn of the century, Madam Butterfly is among the most colourful and exotic of all operas, and from its theme of noble self-sacrifice spring melodies that grip your heart. The basis of the plot is actually the true story of a Japanese geisha girl who has a son by ‘marriage’ to an American naval officer who soon deserts her, leaving her heartbroken. Finally, with the grief and dishonour too much to bear, she kills herself.
This touching story of innocent love crushed amidst two utterly different cultures resonates as strongly as ever in today’s world.
Music by Giacomo Puccini.
Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa.
Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
