Elgar’s popular Serenade for Strings is an attractive early work which already demonstrates his expressive lyricism and technical skill. Brahms, though deeply affected by the deaths of his mentor Robert Schumann and later of his own mother, intended his Requiem not as a personal memorial but as a work of healing for all mankind. Undoubtedly his choral masterpiece, it is not a traditional requiem, but a series of settings of German Bible passages.
