In the 1790s, Haydn made two triumphant visits to London, giving concerts of his music and being everywhere fêted. He also encountered Handel’s oratorios for the first time and, upon returning to Vienna, immediately began work on The Creation. The libretto, based on the Book of Genesis and Milton’s Paradise Lost, had been compiled for Handel but not used by him. It was translated it into German, Haydn set it to music, and then the English was written back into the score, thus creating the first bilingual choral work. It was immediately popular in both Austria and England and has remained so ever since.
