- Piano Concerto No. 3
- Symphony No. 2
- Ronan Magill
- Stephen Brearley
The Doctors’ Orchestra, playing once again in support of Freedom from Torture, presents two of Rachmaninov’s monumental but much loved works.
Held by some to be the most technically demanding of all piano concertos, Rachmaninov’s Third deploys bravura pianism not for its own sake but as a means of creating a work which is by turns thrilling, wistful and tender. Ronan Magill, tonight’s soloist, made his United States debut with it and his Rachmaninov has been praised for its ‘marvellous deep melodic line’.
Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony, unlike his First, was a triumph at its first performance and has remained a favourite with orchestras and audiences ever since.
