Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra kicks off its 50th Anniversary European Tour in the UK led by renowned British Music Director Alexander Shelley. London audiences will recognize Maestro Shelley as the Principal Associate Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Since becoming Music Director of the NAC Orchestra, Shelley has been credited with turning the orchestra ‘almost overnight… into one of the more audacious orchestras in North America’ (Maclean’s).
The NAC Orchestra offers a dazzling programme: Serbian-Canadian Ana Sokolović’s 2015 composition was inspired by music from imagined immigrant childhoods. Commissioned by the NAC, Golden slumbers kiss your eyes… sets folk songs and lullabies in seven languages, all brought vividly to life by Korean-Canadian countertenor David DQ Lee and London Voices.
Next, brilliant Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki takes to the stage to perform Ravel’s dazzling, jazz-influenced Concerto in G – deftly navigating its textures and harmonies with his virtuosic technique. Audiences will quickly hear why BBC Music Magazine calls this Deutsche Grammophon recording artist ‘perhaps the most ‘complete’ pianist of his age’.
The evening ends on a bucolic note with Brahms’ optimistic, forthright Second Symphony.
