Valery Gergiev conductor

In a pair of concerts (4 & 5 March) the Mariinsky Orchestra under Artistic Director Valery Gergiev continues its cycle of late Tchaikovsky symphonies paired with music from Tchaikovsky’s best-loved ballets associated with Marius Petipa and St Petersburg.

Swan Lake, despite an initial failure in Moscow, went on to become one of the most popular ballets in the world, thanks to the revival by Petipa and Ivanov at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1895.

Finishing the programme is Tchaikovsky’s bombastic Symphony No. 4, with its fateful opening motif.
