Directed by the eminent Polish conductor Marcin Nalecz-Niesiolowski, the orchestra performs Elgar’s dramatic overture Polonia, a work that incorporates Polish patriotic songs, a theme by the Polish composer Chopin, as well as the Polish National Anthem. Karlowicz’s meditative tone poem has been described as a “precious musical gem shining like a rainbow”, thanks to its rich colours and reflective atmosphere, whilst Schumann’s romantic Fourth Symphony adds to the emotional mix. The charismatic young British violinist Charlie Siem joins the Orchestra to perform Karlowicz’s Violin Concerto, a light-hearted work full of exuberance and vitality.
