European Doctors’ Orchestra
Stephen Brearley conductor Nadia Lasserson piano
Programme:
Beethoven: Overture Egmont
Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat, Op 19
Beethoven: Symphony No 7 in A Major, Op 92
The European Doctors’ Orchestra is delighted to present this all Beethoven concert in support of the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture. MF, a registered charity established in 1985, is the only organisation in the UK dedicated solely to the treatment of torture survivors.
Since its inception, almost 50,000 people have been referred to it for help. The MF offers medical consultation, examination, forensic documentation of injuries, psychological treatment, support and practical help to torture victims. It needs to raise over £7 million a year in order to continue this work.
An all Beethoven programme seems particularly appropriate for this event. Beethoven returned repeatedly to issues of human suffering and human dignity throughout his life. The concert opens with the overture he wrote for Goethe’s play about Lamoraal, Count of Egmont, who gave his life in the struggle to liberate the low countries from Spanish domination.
