*We regret that Maxim Shostakovich is unwell and has been hospitalised in Moscow with heart problems. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is enormously grateful to Grzegorz Nowak for taking his place at such short notice. The programme remains unchanged.
Maxim Shostakovich is the son of the great Russian composer, Dmitri Shostakovich. He brings very particular insights to his father’s music; here the cheeky and scintillating Festive Overture, the witty Piano Concerto No.2 with its lovely slow movement being of moonlit radiance, and the Fifth Symphony, which has ambiguous political overtones and remains one of Shostakovich’s most personal and richly rewarding pieces.
