The final concert in the Brodsky Quartet’s series celebrating the three great Romantic piano quintets opens with two short works for string quartet, the delightful Two Waltzes by Dvorak, a nod towards the great Viennese tradition. The series’ final work by the same composer, the A major Piano Quintet, returns to his more usual middle-European, folk-influenced style and is an absolute delight for players and listeners alike. The central work on the programme completes the homage to Robert Schumann in the 200th anniversary of his birth: his third and final String Quartet, the A major, is an outpouring of emotions by this troubled soul, opening with a sighing motif as he cries the name ‘Clara’, and ending with a gloriously exuberant and uplifting celebration of life.

'It was, by any yardstick, a vintage Brodsky performance with the group probing the nuances of the quartet, and tapping directly into the spirit of Schumann, which suffuses every heartbeat of the music.
It was an important performance, too. It established, without qualification, what a comprehensive masterpiece is the often-neglected work. Uniquely, in my experience, the performance underlined, through its pristine textures, yearning lyricism and blindingly inventive rhythm, especially in the potent use of subtle offbeats, the sheer originality of Schumann.
Like some of his contemporaries, he is a quintessential Romantic. But he stands apart from the mainstream. He was a one-off: a poet in music. And that was the message of this great performance.'
