The King's Singers are joined by pianist Roger Vignoles for this programme of music from Germany and England.
The first half contains music from the German Romantic period. The 19th Century saw the wider availability of both pianos and printed music and these developments led to the growth of Hausmusik or salon music. Composers such as Schubert, Schumann and Brahms produced large quantities of wonderful part songs, which became popular for performance at home.
The second half starts with music by Benjamin Britten, including his Ballad of Little Musgrave and Lady Barnard, written in 1943 for a group of friends held captive in Germany. The concert ends with a group of songs from the repertoire of the celebrated German harmony group, The Comedian Harmonists, who flourished in the 1920s and 30s.
