This year's gala concert celebrating the independence of Kazakhstan features the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with two prominant Kazakh-born artists. Alfia Bekova is unique in having trained with both Rostrapovich and Jacqueline Du Pre and is the soloist in the hauntingly evocative Elgar Cello Concerto marking the 150th anniversary of Elgar's birth. The conductor is Marius Stravinsky, recently appointed Chief Conductor of the Karelia Philharmonic Orchestra. Stravinsky is the youngest music director in Russia having previously worked extensively in opera and concerts in Moscow, Lithuania and now Italy.
