In September 1892 Dvorák arrived in New York as director of the National Conservatoire of Music. He was both homesick for Prague and excited about the American adventure, an impassioned recipe to create the American-style melodies, heartfelt expression and Slavonic fieriness that is the New World Symphony, its heart being the famous Largo, music of pathos and universally significant having received Spiritual treatment and accompanied a television advert for bread! Here Dvoøák’s ever-popular symphony is balanced by the darkly beautiful and exhilarating Violin Concerto of Sibelius and the theatrically pregnant, grand-scale overture to one of Rossini’s thirty-nine operas.
