Victoria: Requiem
Victoria's 6-voice Requiem has long been held to be one of the pinnacles of High Renaissance composition. Written for the funeral of his long-time employer, the Dowager Empress Maria, sister of Philip II of Spain, Victoria poured all his art and all his intense Catholicism into it. The first half of the programme, by contrast, is devoted to Flemish music, and principally to two paired sets of texts: Media vita and David's lament on the death of his son, Absalom. Lassus rounds these penitential items with two gloriously bright motets.
In association with Hazard Chase Limited.
