Almost every piece in this programme is scored for double choir, reflecting the new way of writing sacred music towards the end of the 16th century. Of course in Venice, and therefore to Gabrieli, this was nothing new, but to Romans like Palestrina it must have seemed new-fangled, at least for a while. In fact Dominque Phinot, from the early years of the century, was one of the first to experiment with double choir as these Lamentations so movingly show.
Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli of course is something apart: also new in a way, out to prove a point about word-setting; and one of the greatest masterpieces of the period.
