In addition to celebrating the tenth anniversary of Cadogan Hall November 2013 marks the centenary of the birth of Benjamin Britten, who preceded HRH The Prince of Wales as the ECO’s very first Patron, and who shaped the ECO’s early years, and in this special year it revisits many of his greatest works. The ECO also celebrates the 70th birthday of celebrated British composer, David Matthews, who was for many years the ECO’s Music Advisor, and who composed his Fourth Symphony (as well as many other works) for the ECO.

The younger generation of British composers is represented by Alissa Firsova, whose Serenade for Strings receives its world premiere. In addition two other Britsh premieres, by Tansy Davies and John Woolrich, feature in the Promenade Concert.
