- Violin Concerto in G, Hob. 7a:4
- Concerto for Violin and Piano in D minor
- Verklärte Nacht
- Julia Fischer
- Oliver Schnyder
The ever-popular violinist Julia Fischer leads the Academy for this beautiful performance of elegant string compositions.
Opening with Haydn’s Violin Concerto, this is followed by Mendelssohn’s double concerto for Violin and Piano, for which the orchestra is joined by pianist Oliver Schnyder.
The concert concludes with Schoenberg’s moving Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night). Inspired by Richard Dehmel’s poem, this masterpiece of the 20th century reflects the imagery of a moonlight night, a woman’s heartfelt confession to her lover and the man’s forgiveness, ending with a feeling of lightness and hope.
6pm: Pre-concert talk
Helen Wallace hosts a pre-concert talk (free for all ticket holders) in the Caversham Room, providing an intimate insight into the evening’s programme from an Academy musician’s perspective with violinist Matthew Ward.
