A tribute to the late Sir Colin Davis (Old Blue 1939–1945).
This important concert is being given as a Benefit for Christ’s Hospital and the wonderful Benevolent Society of Blues, that aids so many Blues in need, be they young or older. It is also given as a tribute to the late Sir Colin Davis, himself an Old Blue who warmly described Christ’s Hospital as a ‘marvellous school’.
The Mainzer Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra has won golden opinions in Europe, and is directed by Anne Shih, a protégé of the legendary Josef Gingold. However, tonight, a distinguished young Guest Conductor will honour us; Ben Gernon was mentored by Sir Colin, and as his protégé won the recent prestigious Nestle and Salzburg Young Conductors Award. It is fitting that he be conducting as a tribute to his mentor. It is also apt that he, at the age of 23, is conducting two very young soloists now blazing their stars across the world. Agnes Langer is Hungarian, and not just a marvellous violinist, but a passionate performer. Pavel Kolesnikov, the recent Honens Piano Competition Prize Winner, is Russian, and one of the most compelling and poetic pianists playing today.
