The St Matthew Passion was composed as part of Bach’s duties as a church musician in Leipzig in the mid-1720s. In the nearly 300 years since its first performances it has firmly established itself as one of the pinnacles of Baroque art. The work sets Luther’s own translation of St Matthew’s Gospel (chapters 26-27) and is scored within a complex double choir structure which contains some of the composer’s most original choral writing and most memorable and heart-wrenching music for the solo voice, including the arias Blute nur, Erbarme dich and Mache dich, mein Herze.
Following their acclaimed performance of Bach’s St John Passion at Douai Abbey in 2009, the choir Vox Cordis will once again be under the baton of their principal conductor, Charlie Grace. They will be joined by Aurum Vocale Baroque (leader Catherine Martin), Anna Dennis (soprano), Helen Charlston (mezzo soprano), James Way (tenor), Stephan Loges (bass), with Jeremy Budd (Evangelist), William Townend (Christus), the Farleigh School Chapel Choir and Hill House Choral Scholars.
