- with Becca Marriott (soprano)
From Pergolesi to Puccini, but with particular reference to Mozart’s famous Da Ponte operas, Becca will examine how composers create the feisty working woman’s voice; in contrast to her sedate and dreamy mistress. Looking at hidden typecasting through the vocal score, she will tackle the provocative social, political and cultural issues which defined women both on stage and off reflecting on how a woman’s status affects her voice.
Fresh from her recent success as Donna Elvira, Becca will illustrate her talk with insights as to how she prepares for some of these defining roles and the vocal challenges they present. Having recently translated a new libretto for Pergolesi’s La serva padrona, Becca hopes to be directing it at the Edinburgh Festival.
