Paul Higgs is renowned as one of the UK’s leading trumpet players and composers. Blending the traditions of classical and jazz in his original compositions, Paul creates exquisite melodies, challenging arrangements, and strong instrumental interplay.
This concert is based around Pavane, Paul’s critically acclaimed new album. It is a collection of original compositions that blend the genres of jazz and classical music. Paul has never felt restricted by musical boundaries and in Pavane he combines the freedom of jazz with the rich sonorities of classical music. The pieces are in song form in a classical style with an emphasis on melody and counterpoint, but with the unmistakeable beat of jazz.
In concert the jazz ensemble is complemented by the melodious sounds of a cello. Paul’s trumpet flows throughout the different soundscapes with a voice that is in turn seductive and playful.
This concert features compositions from the album, supplemented with a selection of faster rhythmic numbers. Most of these are well-known favourites, made famous by jazz greats such as Clifford Brown and Miles Davis, and all of them are guaranteed to quicken the pulse.
