Prior to the composition of his Slavonic Dances, Dvořák was a relatively unknown name, but with the immediate success of the first set of Dances, characterised by fiery Slavic rhythms and exuberant melodies evoking the Bohemian spirit, his international career was launched.
By successfully combining the aesthetics and sound possibilities of Eastern and Western music, Xiaogang Ye has earned worldwide recognition for works such as The Last Paradise, heard tonight with violinist Cho-Liang Lin.
Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition never fails to impress, from the trumpet’s first noble statement of the main theme to the glorious finale, The Great Gate of Kiev.
