The City of London Choir and the RPO return to the stage in the second of a series of concerts featuring two of the great composers, Mozart and Haydn.
The ever-adored and lyrical Piano Concerto No. 21, performed by the exceptional Leon McCawley, opens the evening with a journey from liveliness to suffering, eventually ending in release. This sublime, muted work is strongly associated with the 1967 film Elvira Madigan.
In Haydn’s well-known Paukenmesse, or Mass in Time of War, the insistent and foreboding timpani reflect the troubled time of war in Austria, and underscore an otherwise spirited and sacred choral score.
