The internationally acclaimed Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Valery Polyansky, begins tonight’s concert with the world premiere of Karl Jenkins’ Llareggub. The piece is a commission for the Swansea Festival of Music and Arts programme which is part of this year’s Dylan Thomas 100 festival, marking the 100th anniversary of the writer’s birth. This new three-movement orchestral suite evokes the atmosphere of the mythical village setting of Thomas’ iconic play, Under Milk Wood.
Peter Donohoe is acclaimed as one of the foremost pianists of our time, for his musicianship, stylistic versatility and commanding technique. He plays Rachmaninov’s technically challenging Piano Concerto No. 3. The concert finishes with Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Fifth Symphony, a colourfully orchestrated journey from tragedy to triumph.
